Councils want to ban gas connections in new developments
Thirteen Victorian councils want to outlaw new developments being built with gas cooktops and heating in the attempt to reduce carbon emissions, but state government regulations are preventing them doing so.
The councils and developers say property buyers still have a strong preference for gas cooking, particularly in the wake of strong campaigns by the fossil fuel industry, but that alternatives such as induction for cooking were now cheaper and more efficient.
“Heat pump hot water and split system air-conditioning systems are just far more efficient than gas appliances and solar systems are cheaper than ever,” said Mr Lombard ATA energy analyst.

New homes that go all-electric with solar could save up to $18,000 over 10 years compared with a home that has gas appliances and no solar, according to new research from the Australian Technology Association (ATA). They note that even homes without solar would be better off.
So what changes are Lansell Homes making in the new estates?
We will be installing induction cooktops instead of gas.
Induction cooktops use electromagnetic technology to heat your cookware and its contents without wasting energy heating the cooking surface. Energy is delivered directly to the pot or pan, making it twice as efficient as traditional gas or the old style electric stovetops where the energy must first be converted into heat.
We will be switching from our solar boosted gas hot water system to an electric heat pump.
Heat-pump hot water systems use a refrigeration cycle to extract heat from the surrounding air. They then use a heat exchanger to heat water in an insulated storage cylinder.
These systems work in a similar way to reverse-cycle air conditioners when run on a heating cycle, but heat water instead of the air inside your home.
We will be using electric split systems for heating.
Split systems have an outdoor unit that extracts the heat from the outside air and transfers it to an indoor unit with a heat exchanger and fan to blow the heated air around the room.
These systems don’t generate heat directly using an electric element. Instead, they use heat pump technology to extract heat from the outside air. This makes them the most efficient form of electric heating.
